He's just a friend...

I'm fighting my buzz right now so bear with me. I hung out with my a long time homeboy today (my mom's best friend's son) and his girl today. He and I go way back. And of course we grew up together and he taught me a thing or two hint(not that. keep your mind out the gutter).

When he was like 10 his fam moved... we'll say out west. they would come and visit two maybe three times a year and we would kick it. We had feelings but he was there I was here nothing could be done except phone calls, letters, and send each other gifts. Dam seems like only yesterday I would use part of my allowance to buy calling cards and stamps LMAO!! He graduated high school n not long after got with a blanquita. Nothing against them but, that was a slap in the face. N she's not a Pam Anderson Angelina Jolie Jennifer Aniston type either. *Having a moment*

*moment over* We talk weekly. It's clear that there is chemistry n something there but he's with her and I'm usually dealing with someone or want to be single. Any who, tonight the 3 of us are out drinking chilling having a good time. By the time he has 3 beers he's getting touchy feely. I let it slide w\e he's my home boy from way back. His girl goes to the bathroom (she usually never leaves us alone. she'll go to the bathroom when I go or she won't go lol) and starts reminding me of things from the past and turns up the play hitting. We head to the next establishment and while looking for seats in the bar he grabs my ass while blanquita is on about 8 feet ahead.

Although my homeboy is all kinds of delicious I'm faced with a moral dilemma. First he belongs to the blanquita now. I'm not into messing with other people's property. It goes against my moral fiber. I think if more women weren't willing to mess with men they knew were someone else, less men would cheat. Second, I kinda feel like he was mine first and I should reclaim what's mine. Third, I'm unnerved by his behavior. What does it say about him if he's willing to behave this way with his girlfriend around? I know he's a good guy and he hasn't cheated on her but still. I wouldn't be thrilled if my bf was flirting and groping a good friend he grew up with.

So this is me buzzed and rambling. Do you have any friends of the opposite sex from way back when? How do things work when you're in a relationship?

"On these melodic lines I sniff"

Lately i've been updating my iPod on the regular with new tunes. More than I ever have. There's something about music. She has the ability to change your mood and enhance your life She appeals to me in a way the other arts just can't She understands me like no other I've devoted countless hours pursuing her via concerts downloading and hours in record stores. She truly is my mistress...

I went to see Cadillac records today and it reminded me how much I love and appreciate music. It also reminded me of how much I miss playing music. I've thought about returning to the piano for the past few years but, I can't find a way to fit it in my schedule. I don't think people realize how much work musicians put into their craft. I started piano lessons when I was 5 and had to practice an hour every other day. When I turned 8 or 9 it became an hour a day. At 11 it was two hours a day and at 12 i quit lol. I felt two hours a day was too much time away from jumping double dutch with the girls and my family had practically planned my life for me.

I look at it now and that was really nothing. My cousin is a professional musician and he practices about 8 hours a day. Clearly there's no way I could practice even half the amount of time he does. But if I went back I would need to practice at least two hours a day to catch up. That doesn't even include time to learn new concepts. But I'm so addicted when I start playing that I can't pull myself away. When I visit my father I find myself at the piano for hours not realizing how much time has elapsed. I used to always make fun of musicians when they started making faces, doing strange gestures, and rocking as they played their instruments but now I understand what that was. It was the artist connecting with their craft. The sound itself and playing the music are literally a high.

I discovered this high in 2003 while playing at my father's house. By the time I finished playing I had moved/rocked the piano bench away from the piano and was standing and had some ill facial expressions going on. I didn't even realize my sister was taking pics of me playing. It's an amazing feeling. Every stroke of the keys takes you higher and higher. Mixing the chords, changing octaves, and once I add in the foot petals ooooo weee! I'm oblivious to my surroundings. The only things that exists is the sound i'm creating and euphoria. I don't have to go to the bathroom, i'm not thirsty nor hungry. The music is everything in that moment. Dam, I need a fix right now! lol.

I've rambled long enough. Tell me what does music do for you? Or what branch of the arts appeals to you?

Lovers and Friends

I know I haven't been on my blogging game lately; the end of the semester always get a little crazy for me. Finals are underway and i'll be back

Anyway... I've been into the dating game heavily the past few months. Hang out with guy(s) go on a date just having fun. I have recently diagnosed myself with man ADD lol. I'll like a guy and kick it with him for a while but I can loose interest and place them in the friend category with all deliberate speed. Once placed in the friend category there's usually no coming back.

What makes a guy get moved to the friend category? Hmmm any number of things. A boring guy, if you're life totally revolves around your job, you're an absolute homebody, sucky conversation are all no bueno. Number one reason: inconsistency. This seems to be the biggest one for me. If dude texts/calls regularly and we kick it and he disappears or stops/slows txts\calls I loose interest in him as a potential lover with the quickness. Note that I said if he... I follow dudes lead on the communication front. You call me regularly I call u reg. You contact me once in a while I do the same. Latest guy said " you're too chill. why don't you call me more." Ummm i'm going to chalk his comments up as him being juvenile. Am I supposed to be a neurotic stalker and get buck if you say you're gonna kick it with the boys

I have to say that I don't require much attention lol. I've never been the I wanna see you everyday call and text a million times a day kinda girl. That violates one of my biggest dating rules: Never date someone with too much free time (not that i'm a rules girl but experience has taught me that someone w\o hobbies and friends of their own isn't for me). But I do think if you're into someone you'll make time to see that person. I shouldn't have to beg and plead for you to spend time with me. If you want to you will. If you don't well, I know someone else will. Is this mentality unreasonable?

Am I the only person that gets ADD with the opposite sex? Perhaps its not man ADD...

I am... not feeling B's cd

Seeing as how music is my mistress I thought it was time for a new album review. I checked out Beyonce's "highly anticipated" new cd. I've read a couple blogs about it and heard people talk about it but, I had to check it out for myself I hear music differently than most. I was a training to be a musician (jazz\classical pianist to be exact) in my teeny bopper days.

The cd overall is mediocre. I'm not a Beyonce fan but I can appreciate anybody's craft when it's on point. I appreciate an artist that is willing to take risks with their sound and is constantly evolving. I'll give B props on that front, her sound has evolved over each of her albums but this one can go back where it came from.

Most people have already heard her first two singles: If I were a Boy and Single Ladies. I like If I were a boy not for its lyrical content but b\c she showcases her range and vocal control in that song. Single Ladies is a cute club banger\get hyped with your girls kind of song. I noticed that after Dreamgirls and having to sing alongside a real soul singer (Jennifer Hudson) B has tried stepping her vocal game up ie: doing more runs in her songs and trying to sound more soulful. But her attempts at the runs seem strained, prime example her song "Hello". B is a soprano and for some reason she doesn't seem to be able to transition easily from singing in an alto range to soprano.

In the song "Ego" she attempted to show us her upper range and sounded bad. She's proven her upper vocal range is a her strong point time and time again (speechless, emotions, dangerously in love live performances even on this new one with Ave Maria) but this released recording of Ego is not a good one. She starts sounding a bit horse and lost while in her upper range.

Again I look for an artist's evolution and risks with sounds and improvement in vocal ability. This is a mediocre production in my eyes. Her song Halo is good vocally but I hate the music it sounds a lot like one of Jordin Spark's crappy tracks. Most of the songs on "I am" sound the same music wise the beats are very similar and follow the same handful of chords. The Sasha Fierce part is an amorphous blob of crap. Sweet Dream is decent, Radio is mediocre but will probably become a club joint in certain places, why the hell was she tryna mimic Lil Wayne's A Mili with that crappy track Diva? Who produced that song? They should be banned from the studio for the next 6 months. Mediocre I give "I am... Sasha Fierce" a C.

This cd will not even make it from iTunes onto my iPod. I kinda want my $ back from iTunes for buying this cornball cd. Before this cd I doubted her ability to play Etta James in her upcoming movie citing that she isn't a soul singer like Etta nor can she transition to and from her soprano and alto range well. I thought maybe she'd prove me wrong on this cd...SIKE! We'll see how she does in this movie.

Don't get mad, Try again

I've been watching the news a lot lately and I notice all the coverage Proposition 8 is getting. No problem, however I've also noticed that the talking heads have constantly pointed out that Blacks and Latinos overwhelmingly voted "Yes" to Prop. 8. They've called it ironic, an oxymoron etc... that Blacks and Latinos would vote for Obama but ban gay marriage.

Point 1- Why are people pointing fingers at who voted against Prop 8? The woman's name escapes my right now but she was a guest on Real Time with Bill Maher election week, she pointed out that those who wanted "No" to Prop 8 didn't spend any time advertising Prop 8 to Latinos and Blacks. In the U.S. we all know marketing is key. With California having a large Latino population (who are usually Catholic or Protestant Christians), those against Prop 8 should have been brave and bold enough to try to reach out this population to help Latinos understand their cause. The same goes for blacks, a good percentage of blacks are active Protestant Christians why weren't any efforts made to reach out to them? Now that you know who voted against your cause that means those who wanted "No" to Prop 8 need to start reaching out to Blacks and Latinos not being angry they didn't vote the way you wanted them to.

Point 2- It is clear that religion particularly Christianity is a huge factor in American politics. Don't believe me... why would every news station refer to the Midwest and some southern states as "the Bible belt". It was a big deal when John McCain became a Baptist a few years back. Look at all the attention Rev. Jeremiah Wright got, and how many voters said they wouldn't vote for Obama b\c he was a Muslim and the "the U.S. has Christian values". Knowing how significant a role religion plays in the U.S. Prop 8 protesters should have fund raised and done better at marketing their cause to religious folks. Take a lesson from the Mormons.

Point 3- This is my biggest point... don't equate being gay with being black. They are two very different struggles. Being gay is defined by an act. Someone can assume you are gay all they want but, you are not in fact gay unless you act on it. Being black just is. There is no act, behavior, type of clothes you wear that makes you more or less black... you just are. You're black when you wake up, walk down the street, no matter how many degrees you have etc...
I'm not saying that if you're gay you should have to be in the closet... do what makes you comfortable. But please stop equating being black and being gay. They are not the same. Is there a box on college applications that asks what's your sexual orientation? On the U.S. census is there a question about your sexual orientation? When you apply for a job do they ask if you're gay straight bi etc...? Were your people taken from a continent and brought here to do manual free labor on the basis of their race\looks? No. So please don't go there. The issue was taken to the people of California and the people voted against your cause. If at first you don't succeed try again. Emancipation, voting rights, and the civil rights act of 65 didn't happen over night. Look at what the Mormons did, look at Massachusetts and Connecticut and follow their model and try your cause again in like 2 years.

Moving Forward

What a historic week it has been. Barack Obama is the President-elect of the United States of America! I still get excited when clips of his victory speech are played, I beam with pride.
Now that Obama is going to be the President we can't sit down, go into hiding, or get content. We must continue to be as politically active and aware as we have been in this election. There is still work to be done. The bar has been raised! We must walk a little straighter and with our heads held high.

Now that the bar has been raised here are some things parents and students can do to make sure the we don't go to sleep on the job. In order to get to the mountaintop we have to keep on keeping on. I have two... let's call them oaths\affirmations\reminders of our roles and responsibilities

Students

I will try my hardest in everything I do.
I will strive for excellence at all times, even if my parents are not pushing me to do so.
I won't mock my peers because they speak English well, nor will I make fun of those who have good grades. I will try to emulate them.
It is cool to read books that are not assigned by my teachers. Not just "hood books".
I will hold myself accountable for my own actions.
I will respect my teachers and take my education serious.
I now know that with education all things are possible.
I will dream bigger. There are no limitations on who I can become.
If I work hard I can accomplish anything I set my mind to.

Parents

I will play an active role in all areas of my child's\children's life
I will check their homework
I will make time to go to Parent teacher conference night\day
I'll encourage my children and nurture their dreams instead of telling them what they can't do
I am not my child's friends which means: I won't buy them inappropriate clothing, smoke any substance with them, drink with them, nor will I be afraid to discipline them because I'm afraid "they won't like me".
I'll set rules and boundaries
The T.V. is not a babysitter neither is Wii ,PS3, a computer or any other electronic device
There are other methods to discipline my kids besides beating them (it's still an option, just not the only option)
I'll read to my young children
I'll teach them to be accountable for their actions
I won't curse at my children, EVER
I will listen to my children
I will be a role model for my children
I'll teach them that if they dream of something and work hard for it they can accomplish it.

Let me know if I missed anything

Read and Internalize this!

"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.
Its the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference.
Its the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled - Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.
Its the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.
Its been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.
I just received a very gracious call from Senator McCain. He fought long and hard in this campaign, and hes fought even longer and harder for the country he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine, and we are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader. I congratulate him and Governor Palin for all they have achieved, and I look forward to working with them to renew this nations promise in the months ahead.
I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton and rode with on that train home to Delaware, the Vice President-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.
I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last sixteen years, the rock of our family and the love of my life, our nations next First Lady, Michelle Obama. Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy thats coming with us to the White House. And while shes no longer with us, I know my grandmother is watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight, and know that my debt to them is beyond measure.
To my campaign manager David Plouffe, my chief strategist David Axelrod, and the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics - you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what youve sacrificed to get it done.
But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to - it belongs to you.
I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didnt start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington - it began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston.
It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give five dollars and ten dollars and twenty dollars to this cause. It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generations apathy; who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep; from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on the doors of perfect strangers; from the millions of Americans who volunteered, and organized, and proved that more than two centuries later, a government of the people, by the people and for the people has not perished from this Earth. This is your victory.
I know you didnt do this just to win an election and I know you didnt do it for me. You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime - two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century. Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us. There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after their children fall asleep and wonder how theyll make the mortgage, or pay their doctors bills, or save enough for college. There is new energy to harness and new jobs to be created; new schools to build and threats to meet and alliances to repair.
The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America - I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you - we as a people will get there.
There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who wont agree with every decision or policy I make as President, and we know that government cant solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And above all, I will ask you join in the work of remaking this nation the only way its been done in America for two-hundred and twenty-one years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.
What began twenty-one months ago in the depths of winter must not end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek - it is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It cannot happen without you.
So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. Let us remember that if this financial crisis taught us anything, its that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers - in this country, we rise or fall as one nation; as one people.
Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let us remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House - a party founded on the values of self-reliance, individual liberty, and national unity. Those are values we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, We are not enemies, but friends...though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn - I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too.
And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of our world - our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand. To those who would tear this world down - we will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security - we support you. And to all those who have wondered if Americas beacon still burns as bright - tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.
For that is the true genius of America - that America can change. Our union can be perfected. And what we have already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.
This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one thats on my mind tonight is about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. Shes a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing - Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.
She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldnt vote for two reasons - because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.
And tonight, I think about all that shes seen throughout her century in America - the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we cant, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.
At a time when womens voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.
When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs and a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can.
When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.
She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that We Shall Overcome. Yes we can.
A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes we can.
America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves - if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?
This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment. This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we cant, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people:
Yes We Can. Thank you, God bless you, and may God Bless the United States of America."

I think we all need to read this and internalize it!
I will post more but i'm still taking everything in.
In the meantime, walk a little straighter and with your head held high!!

Questions and observations

I think this will be weekly

1. Why isn't there more discussion of the U.S.' sloppy attack in Syria?
I wonder what will be the outcome of Syria's complaint to the United Nations

2. When will Barbara Walters get rid of Elisabeth D. Hassleback?
Were there no other intelligent young Republicans instead of her? Yes, they do need a Republican on the show but I'm in favor of someone who is more intelligent (not a moron who tries to "divert attention from Palin's wardrobe but to her accessories". WTF. This is why politicians have speech writers so they don't look unintelligent like Hassleback) I propose Barbara Walters get rid of Hassleback and Sheri Shepherd. In their place I propose a Latina and a new Republican. Perhaps, a Latina Republican. We've seen an Asian co-host (Lisa Ling) but never a Latina... it's time Barbara. Shepherd doesn't bring any intelligence to the table so lets just can her.

3. I'm tired of seeing people's fat exposed. Please buy a belt, make sure it holds your pants up. Make sure your shirts cover your gut even when you lift up your arms, if it doesn't wear a tank or undershirt under your shirt (this applies to men and women). If when you sit down you keep tugging at your shirt because its clinging to your fat... buy a larger size. I work in a school and I am so tired of my students raising their hands and out pops their stomach or they bend over and I see gluteal cleft. But what is worse is that I see adults guilty of exposed flesh. Please stop!
4. I think I like Chocolate News.

5. Typos are one thing everybody misspells things from time to time but, improper use of homonyms by adults... wait people who's native language is English and are over 12 is disgusting. Here's a quick grammar lesson
Their- possession. Ex: That is their house
There- direction. Ex: They are going over there
They're- They are. Ex: They are going to the football game.
Two- the number 2. Ex: There are two hoops on a basketball court
Too- excessive. Ex: She wasn't too knowledgeable about foreign policy
To- describes movement or direction. Ex: I went to the bookstore

6. I know this is extremely late but, didn't Phylicia Rashad get robbed at the Emmy's? I watched A Raisin in the Sun again not too long ago and she played they hell out of Mama\Lena

7. This is the most important one, GO OUT AND VOTE on Tuesday November 4, 2008.
I'm not endorsing any candidate here. Just reminding folks every vote counts, get out there!

Ignorance on the loose

When I started this blog I said to myself I was not going to touch politics at all. This post is a small violation of that rule but I think I have to go there. Two "neo-Nazi's" were arrested today because they planned to try to assasinate the democratic candidate for president and kill a total of 102 black people (88 shot 14 decapitated these two numbers are significant to white supremacy). The shooting range for the 102 African Americans was a predominately African American High School in T.N.

This is extremely sad to see especially because it is 2008 however, I can honestly say I'm not surprised. I have to agree with Chris Rock when he said he's surprised when black people are shocked at racism. I've heard quite a few people comment on the arrest today and several people(minorities included) were shocked. Why? I gues i'm not surprised because i've spent my years travelling the states and have been to and partly lived in (parents divorced) the "red states". While in those red states i've heard some saucy\cheeky statements from non-minorities about minorities. Believe me when I say ignorance runs rampant in this country. We've seen a great deal of ignorance at a certain presidential candidate's rallies. I don't expect all non-minorities to be racist or sketchy of minorirties but I am usually not surprised when I hear an ignorant statement.

I talked with a colleague about racism and ignorance within American and she pointed out that my generation is the beginning of change. She reminded me that my generation is the first to grow up being taught that racism is wrong and that the change will take time. And if we continue to keep being politically active, as we are during this campaign season we can help to gradually rid America of its dirty not so little secret.

One of the many faces of ignorance, bigotry, hate, and intolerance>

Chocolate News

I tuned in to the the new sketch comedy show Chocolate News last night and I honestly don't know if I should be entertained or embarrassed by the show. On one hand I thought it showed just how ridiculous we look at times. The PSA by fictitious rapper Phat Man was to promote the No Child Left Behind policy(NCLB). The video shows girls dressed in raunchy school uniforms with the almost standard booty shaking and liquid being poured on the girls. Here's a little bit of the lyrics "Yeah ho, yea bitch, let me see yo coochie twitch". Maybe David Alan Grier was trying to show rappers just how ridiculous and degrading rap videos have become. Perhaps his hope was that the rappers and directors that produce such trash would stop and evaluate the current state of rap videos.

The segment continues and shows Phat Man performing his PSA in front of a group of kids; kids I'm guessing between 8-10 years old. The lyrics weren't edited and the message wasn't tailored to children. I find it interesting when people say rappers should go into schools and talk to the kids. No, they shouldn't, real lyricist should. Many don't know how to tailor a message to kids nor do they realize the impact they have on kids. Or perhaps they don't care if their lyrics negatively affect kids. What would Lil Wayne say to motivate kids? Don't write nothing down and devote your minutes seconds hours to the almighty dollar. How about 50cent, is he going to talk about getting shot? I know, let's send Three 6 Mafia... SIKE!!!!!!! Why would we want morons talking to our kids in person? Isn't it already bad enough they talk to our kids on the radio and videos. I know some folks will say they are just making the music that sells and are actually intelligent but, if you you have to "play dumb" and create mentally retarded music that degrades women, glorifies the streets, and encourages hurting your own people(intellectually and physically via selling drugs and violence) that makes you a puppet and therefore a buffoon. We should be done shucking and jiving.

On the other hand I see the show as just another platform for us to make dam fools of ourselves much like Flavor of Love 1-3, Hell Date, I Love New York etc... Why do we keep joining shows that are designed to humiliate us? I'm going to see the glass as half full in this case. Grier is trying to get us to stop and evaluate ourselves. I guess this is why some people like or dislike the Boondocks. I see the Boondocks as trying to get black folks to stop and look at how messed up certain things in our community are and figure out how to fix them. Some just see it as junk.

A Dream Deferred

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore-- And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

This poem has been lingering in my head for quite a few days now and I felt the need to share it. I don't know why it's lingering but it is. Enjoy it.

Analysis of C and C

I was walking home from classes today and recalled a conversation with a high school friend. The conversation was about the Cosby Show. We discussed the dynamic of family that was portrayed on the show. We all know the Cosby Show was the first all African American cast television program to show a functional, educated, upper middle class family. The show was important far beyond this explication. The show taught the viewer how to be a loving, devoted, caring: father, wife, friend, sibling, and child. We're going to explore the spousal relationship between Cliff and Claire and define the real Alpha Female.

Cliff and Claire (from this point on C&C) had an awe inspiring relationship. They were a functional, loving, educated couple that never forgot their humble beginnings. A good portion of episodes have a scene with C&C dancing, feeding each other (Claire's birthday with the cakes was cute), listening to a favorite song (my favorite was the one when Clair plays "Candy"by Big Maybelle),pillow-chat,and their unforgettable moments on the couch. The various episodes allowed viewers a glimpse at various aspects of a couple's daily life, granted it was a a very Utopian life, but a life to maybe try and emulate.

I've been reading a lot of blogs about Alpha Males and Alpha Females and who they like to date etc... and C&C's relationship comes to mind. Claire was without a doubt an Alpha Female. By Alpha Female I mean an articulate, strong-willed, career woman, post women's lib kinda lady. Because of her character and traits she definitely could have been the bitter, I don't need a man, cantankerous friend that thinks all men are intimidated by her strength of character. The woman I just mentioned often thinks she is an Alpha Female but she isn't. She's insecure, thus she needs to constantly remind whomever is around she's independent and doesn't need a man. Often times she's emotionally damaged. A real AF also knows that you don't have to be boisterous and constantly remind folks who you are, they already know because you exude it. "Courage does not always roar, sometimes it is a tiny voice whispering to us". She knew how to step aside and let Cliff be the "man"/ "man of the house"... at least is some instances. She knew how to include him in her decision making process.

Yes, yes this is a fictional relationship but I think this art mimics reality. If you are a real woman or an AF(confident and secure in yourself and your relationship) who is dating a real man you will not have a problem stepping aside and letting your man (at least on occasion) be the man. An alpha female I know broke it down very well, "If you are with a real man, in the sense that he is a provider spiritually, emotionally, physically, and financially yes in that order your spirit will not mind you letting him assume the role of head the house/ be the man". Well said AF. I know some feminists and wanna be AFs will disagree with this and start their don't need a man, why do I have to step aside line of questioning; and I welcome your comments but it's "the way I see things".

I know this is an analysis of a fictional couple but the question, "Does art mimic life, or does life mimic art?" has been asked many times over. I think it is a case by case analysis. In the case of Dr. Heithcliff Huxtable and Claire Hanks Huxtable art is mimicking reality.

Saadiqism

So my current music obsession is Raphael Saadiq. I've been a fan of Saddiq since the days of Toni Tony Tone. His current project "The Way I See It" stands out in a different way. This project cemented in my mind what a real musician is and does. A real musician is not afraid to take risks with their sounds and put out the music they want. When interviewed Saadiq said he's not trying to please anyone, he just goes in a room and creates. I respect that. I don't respect artist that try to conform to the bubble gum shitty music that radio stations seem to love to play. After seeing Saadiq perform, it is apparent that he really does just go in a room and create. I saw him at SOB's and he and his band jammed for a good 10-15minutes to his song "Be Here" from his first solo project InstantVintage. While playing the song He and his bandmates were all in a trance. You had to be there to see their facial expressions and body movements were dictated by their body's response to the sounds they were creating.

The album is what most people call a throwback to old school soul but I don't see it that way. It's Saadiqism. He's a real musician in the sense that he has listened to and studied music all his life and has made tracks that are an eclectic mix of all the sounds he has grown to love. This album has some of that 70's soul sound as well as gospel influence with a hint of Doo Wop. It reminds me of the Delfonics (Oh Girl reminds me of them), Temptations (Love that Girl), stylistics and I hear a hint of Al Greene and Marvin Gaye with Let's take a walk (this song kinda had that Pips feel to it also) in there. What makes the album even better is that Saadiq plays a good portion of the instruments himself. He does bring in other muscicians to play some instruments like his guitar player for some tracks. That man is bad!!! I must say he was rocking the most at the show.

At any rate, his cd is getting major burn in my stereo and Mp3 player

The first pic is of Mr. Raphael Saadiq the second is the guitar\bass player and third the background singers.

So I'm not really sure why I started this blog. It's not like I don't find enough things on the web to distract me. I guess I started it so I can share a few of my thoughts and things I learn. We'll see where this goes.
